Summary

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment。 World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us。 For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves。 Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality。 The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now。

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader。 It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now。 Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace。 Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices。 the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL。

I approached this with incredulity。 I can intellectualize the concept of mindfulness and appreciate its principles, but I can never fully "get" it。 I'm surprised I'm pretty moved by this one (perhaps the first one so far)。 It is so timely as my country is still no way near recovering from the global pandemic, and I miss traveling so much。 When he said "We don't have to travel to enjoy the blue sky," I felt awakened。 Indeed, I do not need to move away to enjoy life。 I have also been feeling angry I approached this with incredulity。 I can intellectualize the concept of mindfulness and appreciate its principles, but I can never fully "get" it。 I'm surprised I'm pretty moved by this one (perhaps the first one so far)。 It is so timely as my country is still no way near recovering from the global pandemic, and I miss traveling so much。 When he said "We don't have to travel to enjoy the blue sky," I felt awakened。 Indeed, I do not need to move away to enjoy life。 I have also been feeling angry lately, and this book couldn't come at the right time。 "We don't need surgery to remove anger," I am reminded to continue my meditation practice and be one with my anger (not go away from it; anger is not bigger than me, it is a part of me)。 I now understand why Thich Nhat Hanh is so often quoted, so far I have resonated with these the most:♡ "To suppress anger is to suppress ourselves" ♡ "Every side is our side, there is no evil side" 。。。more

Might be a good introduction book into meditation and appreciating the nature / “mother earth”, but for me it did not say much new。 Some thoughts:***We are good at preparing to live, but not to actually live。 We are willing to work very hard for something in the future, but forgetting to be in the present。***“Mouth yoga” - a very small gentle smile like Mona Lisa (the painting from Da Vinci) will relax Your face muscles and bring instantly a better feeling - do this often。 Hang something in Your Might be a good introduction book into meditation and appreciating the nature / “mother earth”, but for me it did not say much new。 Some thoughts:***We are good at preparing to live, but not to actually live。 We are willing to work very hard for something in the future, but forgetting to be in the present。***“Mouth yoga” - a very small gentle smile like Mona Lisa (the painting from Da Vinci) will relax Your face muscles and bring instantly a better feeling - do this often。 Hang something in Your house to remember doing this “Mouth Yoga” until it becomes automatic for You。***Mindful breathing ALWAYS slows down our thinking。 Most of our automatic everyday thoughts are useless anyway。 For mindful eating, try to eat in silence。***If You look at somebody for 5-10 seconds and really acknowledge them, it is more that most people do in a day。***If You are rushing towards the good in life (desert, vacation etc) then You probably will rush past it too, not really enjoying it。 But if You practice being present while washing dishes, then You also will be more present on the good stuff, not wanting to rush to the next thing。***Western culture: “Don’t just sit there, do something!”。 We should try the Eastern way, just sit there。***If You want more peace in Your future, You should work for more peace in the present moment。 The peace will not come trough Your work towards the future, but in Your ability to find peace。***Western culture we want to operate bad things out, want to take pills to escape, or hit pillows for a quick relief。 But we should be focusing on then reasons why the problem came in the first place, not try to get rid of it。***A teacher has to give birth into the teacher in the student。 A therapist has to give birth to the therapist inside the patient。 ***We must NOT discipline somebody (a child etc) through anger。 First we should be mindful about them。 And then if discipline is needed, we do it through compassion, not trough anger。***Gas can be used for cooking - or to kill somebody。 Electricity could be used for light - or to kill somebody。 We have to understand thinks to use them for the good。 We also have to understand all people, so we can bring out the colors inside them, not the darkness。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this。 Delightful little observations about life, some with practical applications, other with good mental exercises。 Something I’d like to read again and again!

Great insights from a Buddhist monk。 The kind of book that’s good to listen to so you can just let it guide you, and also good to own so you can pick it up and review some of the meditations。A good example of learning from this book: early on, he uses the words “present moment” a lot。 I got really annoyed with the repetitiveness and I realized that I was waiting for him to introduce a new concept instead of doing exactly what he said, which is living in the present moment。 So I tried really hard Great insights from a Buddhist monk。 The kind of book that’s good to listen to so you can just let it guide you, and also good to own so you can pick it up and review some of the meditations。A good example of learning from this book: early on, he uses the words “present moment” a lot。 I got really annoyed with the repetitiveness and I realized that I was waiting for him to introduce a new concept instead of doing exactly what he said, which is living in the present moment。 So I tried really hard to focus on his ideas, and it was a lot more enjoyable after that。I especially love how Buddhism seeks to understand the world as a whole, and it being more than the sum of its parts。 And seeing a whole situation。 Hanh is a great example of seeing things clearly。 Really enjoyable read。 。。。more

This book made me think about global connectedness in a new way, and it was peace-giving to read it。

It sounds great but its not easy to follow, though one should I suppose!

I enjoyed this book。 My favorite section of the book was the first part because he laid out many of his primary arguments and was very concise。 I have read multiple mindfulness books and what stood out for me in this book was the authenticity。 I could tell just from the authors words how invested he was in his practices。 As a result, I learned a great deal from this book and will continue to incorporate his teachings into my own life。

This was a nice quiet read。 I actually wish it were more in-depth about Buddhist practices specifically so maybe I should've chosen a different Hanh book to start with。 This was a nice quiet read。 I actually wish it were more in-depth about Buddhist practices specifically so maybe I should've chosen a different Hanh book to start with。 。。。more

I’d say this book changed my life! I never thought I could meditate because I was “too active” inside my head。 This book began my mindfulness journey and my journey of self exploration。 TNH is a guru and all of his stuff is so easily read and applicable, but it takes work!

Mindfulness is one of the very few practices - besides climbing mountains, which is just arguably also mindfulness, having to pay attention to my surroundings and be 100% present - that has helped me to manage my anxiety。 If you're looking for a small book that talks about how to practice mindfulness and the importance of mindfulness in both individual and collective ways, this is it。 I think I was hoping for a little more - this book was actually recommended to me as a first step in exploring B Mindfulness is one of the very few practices - besides climbing mountains, which is just arguably also mindfulness, having to pay attention to my surroundings and be 100% present - that has helped me to manage my anxiety。 If you're looking for a small book that talks about how to practice mindfulness and the importance of mindfulness in both individual and collective ways, this is it。 I think I was hoping for a little more - this book was actually recommended to me as a first step in exploring Buddhism, and while I know mindfulness is a central practice of this faith tradition, I was perhaps hoping for more theology。 Nonetheless, this is a great simple, practical book with lots of small stories and practices for digesting the art of mindfulness。 。。。more

This book was not read by the author, but by one of his disciples。 There’s an introduction where I learned a lot about Thích Nhất Hạnh and his mission of spreading peace。 In the book itself, I learned an important step for mindfulness meditation that I have implemented into my life。I listened to the book while I was on the subway to and from doctors’ appointments, and it was really soothing to have this meditation。

This is a beautiful book but I think he believes too much in mindfulness。 Yes I agree being mindful can help in many situaltions but when he said that it can fix depression and anxiety (whixh is why I am reading this book) I find he is putting too much faith in it。 Anxiety and depression is a chemical inbalance being mindful can help but cannot cure it! This book probably would have been more meaningful as an introduction to this way of thinking if I had read it years ago when I bought it。 As it is, I have just came off a year long yoga teacher training that was heavily philosophical, and much deeper than this book。 The passages on overcoming strong emotions are good for anyone at any time, but the book overall felt more introductory。 You can get much more depth in all of the concepts presented here。 Great for anyone unfamiliar with this concep This book probably would have been more meaningful as an introduction to this way of thinking if I had read it years ago when I bought it。 As it is, I have just came off a year long yoga teacher training that was heavily philosophical, and much deeper than this book。 The passages on overcoming strong emotions are good for anyone at any time, but the book overall felt more introductory。 You can get much more depth in all of the concepts presented here。 Great for anyone unfamiliar with this concepts though。 。。。more
